Abstract
Dimensioning is a core element of engineering drawings that communicates the size, shape, and location of features. This paper reviews traditional and modern dimensioning techniques, evaluates their impact on design clarity and manufacturability, and compares manual vs. CAD-based methods. It emphasizes global standards like ISO 129-1 and ASME Y14.5, and highlights the role of GD&T, Model-Based Definition (MBD), and digital twin technologies in modern engineering workflows.
Keywords
Dimensioning, Engineering Drawing, Linear Dimensioning, GD&T, ISO 129, ASME Y14.5, CAD Drafting, Tolerancing, Technical Communication, Manufacturing Accuracy
Conclusion
The study concludes that effective dimensioning is essential for manufacturing accuracy and design communication. While traditional methods remain relevant, modern CAD tools and GD&T frameworks offer superior precision. Training, standard compliance, and digital integration are key to improving drawing quality and reducing production errors.
